Tampa fugitive arrested in Mexico

TAMPA - A dangerous convicted felon wanted in Hillsborough County on sex charges involving a minor child was captured Thursday in Mexico.

Manuel Miranda-Colon was taken into custody by United States Marshals with assistance from the Mexican Police.

The suspect was transferred to the Imperial County Jail in California where he will remain pending extradition back to Tampa to face eight counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor.

Miranda-Colon, who has an extensive criminal record, was arrested originally by the Hillsborough County Sheriff?s Office last March. He remained behind bars until he posted bond on July 18 according to jail records.

Investigators say Miranda-Colon had been traveling with a female from the Tampa area at the time of his arrest. The woman was the subject of a recent Missing and Endangered person bulletin issued by law enforcement.

The suspect was released from state prison in 2010 after serving time for a probation violation for a previous conviction on attempted murder and false imprisonment charges.

According to a US Marshall Office?s report the female escaped from Miranda-Colon and gave authorities information on his location. She drew a detailed map to a residence and law enforcement moved in and arrested him.

Miranda-Colon has an arrest record in Hillsborough County that goes back 16 years. His prior arrests include charges of assault, battery, petit theft and attempted murder.
