Ezines are sometimes called 'opt-in' lists because everyone who receives an ezine has chosen to do so.

And that's why ezine advertising gets results. People read ezines and they'll read your ad. And if you've matched the ezine to the product you're selling, you've reached your target audience.

There are currently around 90,000 ezines being published every month. So whatever you're selling, there's more than likely an ezine that will take your ad straight to the audience you want to reach.

Ezine advertising is not only effective, it's cheap as well.

A 5 line ad in an ezine that goes to 3000 people will cost you between $5 and $20 per issue.

As a general rule, you'll always get back at least the cost of the ad, and usually much more. So there's very little risk.

But there are some tips for successful ezine advertising. Here they are:

1. The first and most important rule is: "Track your Ads!" Say you place an ad in 5 different ezines and get a hundred responses. If you don't track your ads, you won't know which ezines were pulling responses and which weren't.

But how do you track your ads?

The simplest method is to place a key or a code at the end of your email address:

yourname@yourdomain.com?subject=ezineA

Then, when you get a reply with 'ezineA' in the subject field, you'll know which ezine it came from.

For a URL, it's the same principle:

http://www.yourdomain.com?ezineA

However, if you're going to code your URLs, you'll need a good webstats program to track the coded URLs. These two programs are excellent and they're both free:

Here's another way to code your URLs: for every ezine ad, create a duplicate of your homepage and name the page after the ezine that your ad will appear in. So, if the ad is appearing in EzineA, this is the URL you'd place in that ad:

2. Target your audience. It may seem obvious but some advertisers overlook this. If you're selling a web-marketing course, don't advertise in an ezine that deals with stock options; they probably won't be interested.

Use the 'subject categories' in any ezine directory to find ezines that relate to the product you're selling. You can find a list of 56 ezine directories in 'The Free Directory of Ezines' at:

3. Once you've chosen a number of ezines that target your audience, subscribe to them and examine the ads closely. If you see an ad that keeps repeating issue after issue, you can be pretty sure that it's getting results. You've found a good ezine to advertise in.

4. Check to see how many ads are in the ezine. You probably won't get much response from an ad in an ezine that has 15 or 20 ads per issue. Readers of those ezines have become hardened to the ads and have learnt to skip them.

5. Check to see if the ezine publisher has a policy of never running ads for two similar products in the same issue - your ad will be much more effective if it's the only one of it's kind in that particular issue.

6. Small ezines Vs. Big ezines: bigger is not always better. The big ezines with 1000's of subscribers tend to have more ads than the small ezines. Also, small ezines with only a few hundred subscribers often have a much more targeted audience than the big ezines.

7. Repeat your ads. Research shows that off the Web, an ad has to be seen about 21 times before someone acts on it; on the Internet it's about 9 times. If your budget allows, try and have your ad repeated at least three times in a particular ezine. Most ezines offer discount packages for bulk advertising.

8. Email address Vs. URL. The advantage of giving an email address is that it gives you the opportunity to send a powerful sales letter to the person who responded to your ad. It's also much easier to track your ads with an email address than a URL.

9. Offer something free in your ad copy. It'll often tip the balance between a response and no response.

10. Keep your ads short, even if you're not using the number of words you're allowed. Short ads are more likely to be read. Keep your sentences short too; they pack much more power. Use the word 'You'. Don't describe your product but tell the reader what your product can do for them.

?Belfast was a byword for gloom during the Troubles that spanned from the late 1960s to late 1990s, but it is experiencing a new vitality.

Ironically this coincides with the anniversary of the tragedy of the RMS Titanic, which sank 100 years ago on April 15 with a loss of more than 1,500 lives. Belfast is set to commemorate this sad milestone with church services and other events.

The city, which tried to ignore the Titanic until recently because of misplaced guilt at her loss, is now celebrating the shipbuilding genius of the Belfast workers who made her the most advanced vessel in the world at the time. Two recent developments helped the Titanic to become a source of pride: the discovery of the wreck in 1985 by Robert Ballard and the 1997 blockbuster movie, ?Titanic.?

Gradually it became respectable to talk about the Titanic in Belfast, and the city?s shipbuilding history will be celebrated during the Titanic Belfast Festival in April.

The new Titanic Belfast museum will be the world?s largest Titanic visitor attraction.

This befits a resurgent Belfast that was nominated by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the world?s top tourist attractions for 2012, and with the steady improvement of political relationships, the city looks set for much happier times.

MiMedia is an online backup and storage service that specializes in letting users secure, enjoy, and share personal digital media such as music, photos, and video. Like Nomadesk (3 stars, $50/year), MiMedia's is more about synced online storage than traditional online backup?new and changed files automatically go up to the cloud?with no scheduling required. Currently there's no Mac software client, but MiMedia states that it will arrive in 2012. Still, MiMedia has many consumer-friendly perks that separate it from the pack.

Pricing
MiMedia serves up a hefty amount of storage. Free account users receive a decent 7GB of storage, but if you opt to pay for additional space MiMedia offers 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB plans starting at $9.99, $20, and $35 per month, respectively. In comparison, our Editors' Choice, SOS Online Backup (4.5 stars, $9.95/month) offers storage capacities ranging from 50GB to 1TB. Carbonite (3 stars, $55/year) and Mozy (3 stars, $54.45/year) take a different approach?unlimited storage covering one machine for about $55 a year. In all, MiMedia's pricing is quite reasonable.

Setup
To start with the free trial account, all you need is an e-mail address?you aren't required to input a credit card number, which simplifies the process. Downloading the software to a computer requires a Windows PC (XP SP2 to Windows 7), 1GB RAM, and 20MB of hard drive space. Once the software's installed, a wizard starts up, asking you to sign up for an account or sign in. Right off the bat, the service gets points for supporting external and network drives, something you also get in SOS, but not in Carbonite. This support is important for those pictures and videos on your mobile phone as well as on a USB stick or camera memory, though MiMedia lacks SugarSync's previous file version saving.

Next, you wait while MiMedia calculates the amount of storage you'll need for each selected folder or drive. After this, you click Save and select a method by which your data will be copied to MiMedia's servers: Internet or Shuttle Drive. The former lets you backup data via the Web; the latter lets you request a free Shuttle Drive that you can use to mail in your data should the Web process prove too drawn out. One nice thing about this process: you can go back to any Web browser at any time and change the settings for any drive in your account.

There's no scheduling option, as MiMedia works constantly in the background looking for added and updated files in the folders you've specified (or those chosen automatically by the Basic and Recommended choices above.) Because of this, you could consider it a syncing service rather than just online backup. But it's only syncing to the cloud?it doesn't sync among PCs the way SugarSync and DropBox do. MiMedia, however, didn't present any difficulties in adding more PCs the way SugarSync did, and offers a lot more with media display and cloud storage than DropBox's simple synced folders.

Next came MiMedia's special sauce: The Free Shuttle Drive service. Though my backup was only calculated to take 12 hours, I signed up for a disk anyway. At this point, I had to enter a password, full name, and address. If you want a Shuttle Drive, you must also enter credit card info.

The disk arrived with a return USPS postage sticker, and was tied to my account--it won't work outside of the MiMedia context, so don't get any ideas of using it for other purposes. Immediately after I plugged it in, I got a popup message saying "Shuttle Drive Detected." After a Windows security okay, another dialog said, "Your Shuttle Drive is Connected," and offer me a Start button. Within seconds, my 3GB of data was on the drive. A final dialog suggested I plug the drive into the other systems in my account. After that, it was just a matter of dropping the disk in the mail. The disk is secured with AES 256 encryption, while uploads are secured with 128-bit SSL.

Mysterious booms rattle residents of Wisconsin town

Mysterious noises and ground vibrations are unnerving residents in Clintonville, Wis. WGBA-TV's Brian Miller reports.

What goes "boom" in the night? The exhausted residents of Clintonville, Wis., wish they knew.

Since Sunday evening, mysterious?sounds have been jolting the city awake, and no one can explain where they're coming from.

"People describe them as booming, thunder-like noises -- vibrating, shaking," Lisa Kuss, Clintonville city administrator, told msnbc.com. "The most extreme one I experienced was at 10 p.m. Monday night in our utilities room, and it was a bam."

That night, city officials received nearly 100 calls about the unexplained shaking. Alarmed, city officials tested gas levels, investigated sewer systems and landfills, and checked on?city dams.?Everything came back normal.?

"People are, number one, somewhat scared," Kuss?said. "But as time passes, they're more frustrated than scared; there are a few that have left. They say, 'We need to get some sleep.' They're frustrated it's elevated at night."

On Sunday night, the booms happened at around 8 p.m., 10 p.m., midnight, 1 a.m., and 2 a.m., according to a press release from the city. They came back again Monday night, and after a brief reprieve overnight Tuesday, they returned early Wednesday.?

The city's 4,600 residents have been invited?to a meeting Wednesday night at the high school to discuss the situation, even though there isn't much news to tell them.

"The only thing we can really conclude is a lot of things it isn't," Kuss said. "It doesn't seem to be related to our systems. It's not the military. It's not a mining pit that's being blown up. We've never had any earthquakes; we've had a couple of people tell us we're on a fault line, but we have no way to confirm that."

A professor's?theory: Groundwater
According to Steve Dutch, a professor of geoscience at University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Clintonville doesn't lie on a fault line.

"The USGS is not picking up any earthquakes in Wisconsin. These appear to be purely local events. People 50 feet away don't feel anything," he said.

But he has another idea.

"After thinking about it, I would start looking at the movement of groundwater," Dutch told msnbc.com. "If some of that water is being removed, from pumping, maybe, the rocks are settling a bit, and that's producing some of these sounds."

Groundwater is precipitation that has seeped through soil and is stored in rocks. Dutch theorizes that the city utlity might be pumping water at night, causing shifts and vibrations, and explaining why the booms are more frequent when people are trying to sleep.

"It might have to do with water usage, water flowing back at night, causing the noises. Or maybe pumping rates are cheaper at night," he said.

Further supporting his theory is the type of rock beneath Clintonville: sandstone.

"People have suggested sinkholes [are causing the noises]," Dutch said. "That's pretty unlikely because the rocks under Clintonville are not limestones or soluble rocks that would produce sinkholes."

Dutch, who has a Ph.D. in structural geology, said he's never heard of anything like Clintonville's booms.

"I'll get a call from somebody who heard a boom at their house, and I just have to say, 'I can't really tell ya,' but not on this scale," he said.?"Sometimes in science, we don't really know."

On discussion boards and on YouTube, commenters have proposed everything from meth labs?to the construction of?a complex?underground shelter network?as the source.

California struggling to prepare quake early warning system

Japan has one. So do Mexico, Taiwan, Turkey and Romania.

But California has struggled to develop and deploy an earthquake warning system that would give cities seconds of crucial time to prepare for the impact of a massive earthquake.

California is spending only a fraction of what Japan and Mexico have devoted, and scientists said the progress is so slow that they cannot say when the state might complete its own system.

Until recently, researchers were spending only about $400,000 a year developing the technology. Last year, they received a $6-million grant for work on a new prototype. But experts said it would cost about $150 million to build and $5 million a year to operate a system covering California and other quake-prone states along the Pacific.

Japan's system cost $1 billion to build and includes 1,000 GPS sensors to detect and monitor seismic waves.

One reason for the lack of interest, some experts say, is that unlike Mexico, Japan and the other countries with early warning systems, California has not experienced a truly catastrophic earthquake in more than a century.

"I think it'll happen. The question is whether we get it sooner than before we have a tragic earthquake or whether we have it after a tragic earthquake," said Thomas Heaton, a professor of engineering seismology at Caltech. "Unfortunately in the earthquake business, often things don't happen until we have a tragedy."

Officials in California have been working on a system for about five years. And as personal technology continues to evolve, their current warning plan is geared heavily toward social media and mobile communications.

Alerts of coming quake waves in California could be sent via Twitter and other forms of social media, with scientists hoping to get word out as broadly as possible. Alerts would also go up on TV and radio. With the warning, scientists hope that emergency crews would have time to open fire station doors, protect nuclear power plants, slow down trains and take other measures before the quake was felt.

Researchers have also launched a campaign for the public to attach accelerometers to home computers and smartphones that could transmit earthquake shaking to authorities in real time. They believe that this data, combined with information gleaned from underground sensors placed throughout the region, could help with the early warning system.

Waves from a quake move quickly through the ground, but electronic signals are far faster, allowing a warning to outrun the shaking.

Officials said the length of the warning depends on the quake's epicenter. A temblor along the San Andreas fault around the Salton Sea, for example, could give up to a full minute of warning time before shaking occurred in Los Angeles, officials said.

When Japan was rocked by a 9.0 earthquake last year, the warning system sent an alert to Tokyo before the seismic waves of the quake reached the city. The same thing happened in Mexico City on Tuesday after a 7.4 quake occurred near Acapulco.

Both systems are far from perfect. Both underestimated the size of their respective quakes, and in Mexico City warnings were not as widely distributed as they should have been.

Experts warn that Los Angeles presents special challenges for an early warning system that are less of a problem in Tokyo or Mexico City.

The systems in Japan and Mexico often detect seismic waves coming from quakes that erupt off the coast at some distance. Mexico City is actually more than a hundred miles from where these earthquakes spawn, said Caltech seismologist Pablo Ampuero, who is working on California's early warning efforts.

"They are worried about those earthquakes because the soil of Mexico City is soft as to amplify the shaking. It behaves like jelly when an earthquake reaches it," Ampuero said. "Even if an earthquake happens on a far coast, if it reaches Mexico City, it can cause severe damage."

By contrast, Southern California is crisscrossed by active fault lines such as Newport-Inglewood, Hollywood, Puente Hills and Whittier.

A major quake on those faults could be felt in L.A. almost immediately. By contrast, a quake on the San Andreas fault, which experts have long predicted would produce "The Big One," could provide more time.

"If an earthquake happens here, you don't have that much time to detect it and generate an alarm," Ampuero said. "That's why it's more challenging to have an efficient warning system here. Nevertheless, we have been working on this for several years and the technology is now reaching a maturing stage to make it feasible for an early warning system in California."

Despite these concerns, experts are convinced a system could save lives. Heaton of Caltech said that with adequate funding, a system could be working within three years. But it would probably require a public-private partnership, with utilities and other companies working to ensure the alerts get out quickly.

Mexico City's early warning system, which leans heavily on sirens to get the word out, is bare-bones compared to Japan's or what California researchers envision.

John Vidale of the University of Washington said early warning systems in Japan, Mexico, Taiwan and Romania all function under the same technological principle, detecting preliminary P waves that travel on the surface before the stronger S waves arrive. Japan uses particularly expensive GPS devices that are dropped into boreholes hundreds of feet below the surface.

The American model would be less expensive in part because it would not require the boreholes, Vidale said.

Still, Vidale said, "we are going to have to show that the costs of the system are outweighed by the benefits."

CHICAGO (AP) ? It may be hard to imagine Rod Blagojevich looking anything but boyish in his trademark dark, helmet hair. But his longtime barber said Wednesday that the former Illinois governor has been dyeing his hair for years and now that he is in prison ? where dyes are banned ? it will soon turn gray.

Peter Vodovoz, Blagojevich's Chicago-area barber for two decades, told The Associated Press the 55-year-old has dyed his hair himself, but with no dye available at his lockup, the last color masking his gray will fade within three months.

"His hair will turn gray, like Jay Leno's," Vodovoz said, speaking a week after Blagojevich entered a federal prison outside Denver to serve his sentence on corruption charges.

Hair dyes are strictly banned in the Federal Correctional Institution Englewood because inmates could use them to disguise their appearance in attempted escapes, prison spokesman John Sell said.

Vodovoz, who last cut Blagojevich's hair a month ago, offered his prison-bound client advice he may have difficulty taking: He told him not to fret about his hair behind bars because no cameras will be around to document his changed appearance.

"'There's no media, so don't worry,' I told him," he said. "Who's going to care?"

The two-term governor was closely identified with and parodied for his thick helmet of hair. A comedian on Saturday Night Live once joked that when FBI agents came to arrest him in 2008, Blagojevich asked for five minutes to pack his things ? and for eight hours to comb his hair.

In reality, so obsessive was he about ensuring every strand of hair was in place, Blagojevich famously had a security official carry around a hair brush everywhere he went when he was governor.

And some in the disgraced politician's dwindling fan base remained awed by his hair. After he gave a parting farewell statement outside his house a day before walking through the prison gates, one woman in a crowd of well-wishers reached out to caress his hair.

But it's not all bad hair news for Blagojevich.

Prison rules do allow him to wear it at whatever length and in whatever style he wants ? though barbers available to him in prison likely won't take the same care as Vodovoz.

The barber, a 48-year-old who emigrated from the Soviet Union in 1990, spoke admiringly of Blagojevich's hair as the thickest of man in his 50s he's ever seen and said he'll miss cutting it. Then he added that he thought Blagojevich's 14-year sentence was far too harsh.

"In the Soviet Union, you have to kill someone to get a sentence like that," Vodovoz said in a thick Russian accent. "Blagojevich should have been given community service or something. Now, his life is destroyed. His children's' life is destroyed."
